Whether you’ve traveled all over the world, or barely last a few nights away from home, there are a few basic but often overlooked ways to maximize your hotel experience for a more pleasant and valuable day stay.

At HotelsByDay, we’re striving to create the most seamless and comfortable hotel day stays possible, and while our app and affordable day rates speak for themselves, implementing these simple tips is a surefire way to make your day stay a better experience.

Check out five simple tips to get more out of your hotel day stay below.

1. Talk to the Doorman
Many hotel guests make the mistake of passing bellmen and doormen without much more than a “hello,” let alone thinking to utilize the them for information, dry cleaning, shuttles, snacks, water bottles — and in some cases — discounts for tours or attractions. The next time you check in to stay for the day, introduce yourself, ask how they’re doing, and politely make your inquiry. They won’t be offended if you tip, either.

2. Ask the Front Desk for Local Recommendations
There’s no doubt that hotel concierge staff are helpful, and with good reason: it’s their job to know the marquee attractions in the area like the back of their hand. The only problem with asking the concierge for things to do and where to eat is that they can receive commission or kickbacks from these places based on whom they can refer.

If you’re looking for a truly authentic recommendation, ask a front desk employee for an insider opinion, something they like doing for fun in the area as a local, not a tourist. You’re more likely to get a unique recommendation that’s off the beaten track.

3. Be Polite to All Hotel Staff
This should really be a given, but if it was, we wouldn’t include it on the list. Being polite can go a long way with hotel employees when they’re deciding whether to help you or not.

Always say thank you and please, be courteous, find out their name, and always bring up complaints or discrepancies with caution and sensibility. After all, hotel employees don’t want to make your stay unpleasant, but they’ll definitely lose a lot of empathy if you’re difficult to deal with.

4. Ask the Front Desk for Miscellaneous Items
Hotels tend to have a more extensive supply collection behind the front desk than you’d expect, and guests rarely utilize it. Miscellaneous items like corkscrews and cell phone or laptop chargers sit unused behind the front desk. So if you’ve forgotten your charger, don’t hesitate to run down to the front desk for help.

We all tend to forget essential toiletries on short trips. Items like toothbrushes, toothpaste, razors, and shaving cream are complimentary upon request.

5. Try to Stay at the Same Places
If you regularly travel to a particular city, try booking your hotel day stay at the same location. Over time, you’ll get to know the staff, and they’ll get to know you. It may or may not yield any special perks such as discounted rates, upgrades, VIP status or even free amenities, but at the least, any issues you have will be taken care of immediately, and you’ll experience better service as soon as you’re spotted.

Frustration turned to illumination, witnessing first-hand the important customer behavioral shifts of the ‘on-demand’ economy: something could be done in boosting hotel revenues by selling uncommitted inventory by day.
